Has anyone read Judith Bardwick's One foot out the door: How to combat the psychological recession that's alienating employees and hurting American business. ? I have read reviews and will purchase the book this week and I would be very interested in reading any comments from network participants. I will add some comments after I read the book. In addition, I invited Judith to join the network and feel she would be able to make some excellent contributions.
Yes, I have read Judy's book, its fantastic!!! She has done an excellent job at presenting the financial implications of a disengaged workforce. It should be on the bookshelf of everyone working in this space! I highly recommend it!!

My definition of employee engagement is:

The individual’s investment of energy, skill, ability, and eagerness in the work performed. Engagement includes “involvement” and “commitment” yet goes beyond to include observable behaviors such as:

* Attention to task detail
* Commitment to assignment completion
* Involvement in special projects
* Communication willingly, effectively with others
* Demonstration of personal/professional improvement
* Initiation of problem-solving and/or conflict resolution
* Innovation regarding processes and procedures

If I would just read closely. Here is your definition. Would you be willing to put this forward so that we can discuss is further. I would like to put it on the central main page box and see if we can use it to springboard some reactions and thoughts.

Here's an interesting article about cross organizational differences in employee engagement....lending to the idea that engagement is unique in every environment.
Also, here's a neat video summarizing engagement stats (in the US unfortunately, but neat video nonetheless...)

Certainly the assertions made by the McBassi folks bear examination. However, what they say merely arouses my curiosity in that there's neither expression or exploration of what the specific drivers of engagement are, what the differences within/between businesses are.

I/O/W, I want to know more. I can't find the specific info I'd like on their site. Any suggestions?

Some interesting developments around the older Gallup data which produced the Q12. Curt is developing new tools based on new research. As you probably know, he worked for Gallup when the book was published. I believe he will have a new book out this Fall based on the updated research.
I love this article on using improv tools to engage and enhance collaboration. http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/08/12/rs.how.to.think.on.feet/index.... - we use these tools when clients want on-site programs as they are a great way to get employees to be "in the moment" without the expense, logistics or liability of going to a ropes course or other presencing tools. I very much recommend taking a course and try it with your clients/employees - it WORKS!
