One of our members was looking for the latest research on employee engagement and especially any research on the business case for employee engagement.

When you come across recent research, either from your own company/organization or you read something please put a link in this forum to help all our members stay up to date with the very latest in employee engagement research.

BlessingWhite's report, The State of Employee Engagement 2008, includes citations for studies that claim a link between employee engagement and business performance. Go to: www.blessingwhite.com

I often refer people to the Wikipedia page - go to Wikipedia and search for "employee engagement" - this has a lot of references to ROI models and other research on the benefits of engagement. It may not be the most "recent" in all cases, but it is a good starting point for desk research.

A study was recently conducted by Opinion Research Corporation (ORC) to provide an objective viewpoint on how employees perceive their current work and personal life balance. Our research uses fact-based insights gained from the American public to better understand this very important issue. This effort was solely funded by Opinion Research Corporation to maintain the objectivity of the study and is part of the “ORC Insights” series. We have put a presentation together of the findings and if you're interested in the data please contact me and I will be more than glad to share the results with you. lisa.wojtkowiak@opinionresearch.com or 419-725-6152

We released our employee engagement research findings earlier this year - you can find a summary here:

http://www.internalcommshub.com/open/news/graemereport.shtml

Also, for a similar focus as the research Stephen J. Gill mentions, PeopleMetrics' Kate Feather has spoken about the latest findings of their research on our podcast series (see 12 March listing):

(Both of these resources are free).
Thanks,
Annie

Just in case you haven't seen this, the Towers Perrin group published a landmark study in Oct '07 (7 months ago is recent if you've been on this planet as long as I have....)

From their website: "The Global Workforce Study is the largest study of its kind. We surveyed nearly 90,000 employees in 18 countries, focusing on what drives attraction, retention and engagement."

You'll find a ton of information and resources here.

The business case for employee engagement can be made through casestudies. A recent column by Joe Nocera in the New York Times describes the contribution that employee engagement makes to the success of Southwest Airlines, especially while their competitors are struggling. An important point that can be surmised from the article is that many factors go into business success, with employee engagement being just one of those many inter-dependent factors. For more comments about employee engagement and Southwest, see my blog at: www.theperformanceimprovementblog.com.

Southwest's "family" approach to their employees is a very big reason why my sister still continues to work there, even though she could command a much higher salary (and senior exec position) somewhere else. Heck, even I am made to feel like a part of the SW family when I drop in on her at work!

Pretty powerful stuff, this employee engagement.
