The Employee Engagement Network

Use of The Gallup Q12 Employee Engagement tool. Permissions and legalities of doing so?

We obtained the 12 statements from Gallup's published books (which are in the public domain). We recommend our clients read these books, and we always reference the Gallup organization and attribute copyright whenever we refer to the survey. What are the implications of using these 12 statements in an employee engagement survey? Does one need to obtain permission from Gallup to use it, or can you survey people using the 12 statements and credit Gallup's copyright appropriately?

How do you use this tool? How do you attribute copyright? Do you ask for permission from Gallup?

Any suggestions or learnings people could share on this subject would be much appreciated.

Come now Adrian, they have done all the work to produce this thing, thousands of hours of factor anaylsis, endlessly going over the data, validity tests, etc. etc. Gallup is a fair and reasonable organization, as I have said above, they help people who ask, like myself. This is valuable intellectual property, one of the "family jewels", I don't blame them for one second for protecting it, and just the fact that an academic researcher can use it for nothing is quite nice, don't you think?

Scientific method doesn't need a veto.

If research is solid (as I believe Gallup's is), maintaining the right to have a final say on the publication only hurts the perceived value of the research.

As a Gallup fan and customer, I'd prefer they allow research to be published, regardless of how it suits their purposes.

As I mentioned, I can understand the other side of the argument as well, I just feel this stance actually undermines their credibility more than helping it (in my eyes).
it is not about suppression, it is about ensuring accurate analysis. because we work closely with the researcher in the design and analysis there is no rug pulling at the 11th hour.
Good to know.

Where is this stuff getting published? I'd love to look at some of this work.
Hi Danon,
I contacted them - look on the first page of the thread. We also had a Gallup person add their comments.

I would recommend looking at other instruments if you're interested in measuring employee engagement.
