It's great to see this group on the Employee Engagement Network! Crystal D is excited to attend and exhibit at this year's RPI conference too. We look forward to learning the latest recognition trends and passing along all of the great information provided by RPI!

I want to draw your attention to Recognition Professionals International’s annual conference (full disclosure… I sit on their Board of Directors).

This year’s conference is being held in Naples Florida on May 3rd to the 6th. The conference is a great opportunity to collect tools and techniques that you can readily apply at work in this down economy. If you attend you can take advantage of some great savings:
• Register for the conference and pay the member rate of only $575
• Get one free room night at the Naples Grande (excluding taxes) when you sign up for at least one CRP course on site and register for the conference
RPI is also offering courses in Naples towards Certified Recognition Professional (CRP) certification. You can now take the CRP I online then finish up at the ’09 Sharing Conference. For more information on the conference and CRP please http://www.recognition.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&subarticlenbr=569

The Recognition Council, a strategic industry group within the Incentive Marketing Association has just released an interesting white paper showing how recognition directly affects your bottom line. You can pick up a copy of the white paper as well as other interesting articles at http://www.RecognitionCouncil.org. Happy readings! peter

Cindy: Exciting to hear about the 2nd edition of your book. Since we're both keynoting at the Recognition Professionals International http://www.recognition.org/ conference in Naples, FL May 3 - 6, 2009, I hope we can connect.

Rita: good luck with your keynote too! See you in Naples as well!!

I'm delivering a keynote at a local HR conference (Minneapolis) next week - the theme is How to Motivate Employees in a Tough Economy, and I'm looking forward to hearing what the other speakers have to say as well. Everything from compensation alignment, diverse workforce impact, creating a healthy culture, and FISH philosophy and its effects on employee engagement. Who knows what nuggets I'll discover?!

I am so excited to see this Group on the network! I am looking forward to connecting with everyone. My work is all about employee recognition. I have not been as active as I would like on this network. My book, Make Their Day! Employee Recogniton That Works will be out in the second edition next month and the development work has kept me offline quite a bit. Now I'm ready to jump in and learn what everyone is doing around employee recognition.

With the economy, top of everyone’s mind it seems that that the standard rhetorical question: “How are you?” has been replaced with the more poignant: “Has your business been affected yet by the economy?” However, what is most interesting during this time of fiscal uncertainty are those companies who are reaching out from within the eye of the storm. It is those visionary companies that realize that recognition is their most cost effective weapon to motivate and retain those employees who have hunkered down in the trenches to help their company get through this battle and live to fight again. Ironically, it seems that it is during this time when marketing budgets and cash bonuses are being slashed that company’s realize what their EQ (Emotional Quotient) is and whether their workforce is comprised of mercenaries or patriots. If your company has a strong recognition culture whether it is times of war, times of political unrest or economic hard times, your company’s wallet may hurt but its spirit can not be broken.

During this time of economic uncertainty companies will be judged by how they treat and engage their employees. For those that choose to recognize the efforts of their employees during this downturn they will find that they will retain this talent when the economic climate changes and there is an upturn.

Anytime engagement surveys are done employee recognition is either highlighted or buried within the cores. The bottom line is that recognition is about how a person feels they are valued and respected for who they are as well as what they do. People who feel recognized are always more engaged than those who are not.
