It does work. we have started the EOM in our company after the Gallup survey gave us very low figures in recognition. Its how we frame the policies to not to make it look as a forceful thing being done by the team leaders for their members.
We planned for 2 phases - Began with the initiative within the Head office and later percolating it down to the others. Secondly, we encouraged the team leaders to recognise their team members first then moving on to recognising members of other functions. Will be able to share more if required.

Is there any "Employee of the Month" program that works?

The challenge for all of us is this: How do we inspire employees without selling to them? I hate being sold to, but I love being inspired by great leadership. Unfortunately, recognition and employee engagement have quickly become management words that will lose their value if we aren't careful to show how important they are to people throughout the organization. The C-suite and the front line all want to know "What's in it for me?" We need to answer without jargon to make our work meaningful to those we hope to inspire.

Love it, David.

I had not heard of this term before but it rings true and I like it

I even expereinced "hostmanship" yesterday from a server at my hotel in New Orleans which I wrote up in my blog.

Appreciate the new insights.

Roy,

I so much appreciate you bringing back what your keys on leadership strength and on courtesy. You reminded me of some of the work I have appreciated for a few years now on hostmanship. Click here for a PDF overview of their philosophy and approach.

After an 8 country whirlwind training trip throughout Europe I had an huge learning curve experiencing the different cultures and their impact on employee recognition.

If I was to single out one or two factors contributing to high levels of recognition giving behaviours it would be:

(1) Leadership Strength - the strength of the senior leadership presence and their understanding, example and expectation from others for recognition giving to happen

(2) Courtesy - from the first interaction of staff at reception or on the elevator, to how you are treated throughout the day and at the conclusion, spoke volumes as to how ALL people would likely be treated.

Those were the commonalities I picked up on.

What other principles or things have you observed for exemplary recognition giving in different countries?

I work in the rewards field. We provide North America's Employers with rewards codes that they load with value and deploy to employees who meet KPI criteria. The recipient employee can redeem their code both online and offline for gift cards of their choice up to the loaded value from virtually any major retailer in North America. The codes have no expiry date so they can be accumulated for a larger redemption. I can be reached at area code 416.779.0327 for more information.
