I'd say a big thumbs-up to sharepoint for getting your business processes online, cutting down on email, paperwork, form-filling, etc, and for doing some broadcast communication ... but make sure you've got 50% of your budget left over for pluggin...

It's a useful way to look at the issue from the other end of the telescope - hopefully will help us get the engagement debate out of the old carrot/stick mindset, which I try to remind my colleagues is truly only appropriate for Donkey work. But l...

Linked-In is the de-facto workplace network for me, despite us all being on a new intranet platform, based on Sharepoint. Don't be misled about sharepoint. There are many bolt-on features which attempt to bring social networking capability into i...

We've been using Peak Learning's "Real Deal" cards to ask our employees to register the five things that matter most to them at work, plus a "deal breaker". On seeing what emerges, I think I'd argue there's a slightly wider range to engagement th...

At this point, I'd have to invest in reading your thesis in full to do the argument justice - evolutionary logic and all. I'm going to have to ponder whether I've got spare capacity for that ... if you'll bear with me? But on what satisfies me mo...

Paul, your "hyper-rational" characterisation looks to me like a nasty case of false dichotomy - I wish you a speedy recovery. My point about being wary of reduction beyond the Subject is simply this: some entities must be treated in science as ir...

OK, just for one more round, I'm going to continue to play devil's advocate on this. Labels aside, many of the assumptions behind this line of enquiry look highly biological? I don't believe that's a proper domain for us - which of these question...

I want to get comms & engagement measurement away from 'opinion metrics' and into 'behaviour metrics', where they might become sufficiently robust to attract the interest of non-Comms/HR people, eg line managers, C-suite, perhaps even Board. That'...

I'm impressed by the way this survey collection technique handles "Net" experience, but I'm tempted to say that the label is unfortunate ... in that it still smacks of treating employees as livestock, who we'll poke with a thermometer once a month...

Profile Information

Who are you?
I'm an internal communications manager with the corporate entity of a young financial services TNC, with a 300 year heritage in the UK. Our UK constituency includes perhaps 15,000 high churn, low engagement employees. Other corners of the group have much more enthusiastic employees.
What is your interest or involvement in employee engagement?
I'm hunting the holy grail - a means to quantify engagement that doesn't rely on surveys

Adam,
Welcome to the Manager Tools group. Why not start a discussion on what people think the holy grail might be?

Adam,

I wonder of the sociometer and honest signals might be the tool of the future. A little too early now but I have written two posts about this and have another one for release on Tuesday at www.davidzinger.com. I wonder what other grails are out there. I appreciated your comments from Axel Honneth on recognition. We need more ways that surveys to measure things (at least I think I read that on a survey somewhere! :)

Stay engaged,
David
