To the thread title question, no, surely not. There's a big fat body of 'facts' (as close as management science gets in academia, at any rate) which demonstrates that culture and structure in organisations are two sides of one coin: If you're minde…

I'd say a big thumbs-up to sharepoint for getting your business processes online, cutting down on email, paperwork, form-filling, etc, and for doing some broadcast communication ... but make sure you've got 50% of your budget left over for plugging-…

It's a useful way to look at the issue from the other end of the telescope - hopefully will help us get the engagement debate out of the old carrot/stick mindset, which I try to remind my colleagues is truly only appropriate for Donkey work. But let…

Linked-In is the de-facto workplace network for me, despite us all being on a new intranet platform, based on Sharepoint. Don't be misled about sharepoint. There are many bolt-on features which attempt to bring social networking capability into its…

We've been using Peak Learning's "Real Deal" cards to ask our employees to register the five things that matter most to them at work, plus a "deal breaker". On seeing what emerges, I think I'd argue there's a slightly wider range to engagement than…

At this point, I'd have to invest in reading your thesis in full to do the argument justice - evolutionary logic and all. I'm going to have to ponder whether I've got spare capacity for that ... if you'll bear with me? But on what satisfies me more…

Paul, your "hyper-rational" characterisation looks to me like a nasty case of false dichotomy - I wish you a speedy recovery. My point about being wary of reduction beyond the Subject is simply this: some entities must be treated in science as irre…

OK, just for one more round, I'm going to continue to play devil's advocate on this. Labels aside, many of the assumptions behind this line of enquiry look highly biological? I don't believe that's a proper domain for us - which of these questions…

I want to get comms & engagement measurement away from 'opinion metrics' and into 'behaviour metrics', where they might become sufficiently robust to attract the interest of non-Comms/HR people, eg line managers, C-suite, perhaps even Board. That's…

I'm impressed by the way this survey collection technique handles "Net" experience, but I'm tempted to say that the label is unfortunate ... in that it still smacks of treating employees as livestock, who we'll poke with a thermometer once a month t…

It depends on the shape of the hole the organisation's looking to fill, truly. Sometimes you badly need a subject expert with a long list of professional creds and the insight to give leadership. Sometimes you need someone who has the political appe…

Who are you?
I'm an internal communications manager with the corporate entity of a young financial services TNC, with a 300 year heritage in the UK. Our UK constituency includes perhaps 15,000 high churn, low engagement employees. Other corners of the group have much more enthusiastic employees.
What is your interest or involvement in employee engagement?
I'm hunting the holy grail - a means to quantify engagement that doesn't rely on surveys

Adam,
Welcome to the Manager Tools group. Why not start a discussion on what people think the holy grail might be?

Adam,

I wonder of the sociometer and honest signals might be the tool of the future. A little too early now but I have written two posts about this and have another one for release on Tuesday at www.davidzinger.com. I wonder what other grails are out there. I appreciated your comments from Axel Honneth on recognition. We need more ways that surveys to measure things (at least I think I read that on a survey somewhere! :)

Stay engaged,
David

Do you ever wonder how past leaders could have missed what seems so obvious in hindsight? Sadly, most leaders live in an environment that makes them vulnerable to managerial failure. The problem lies in a little-recognized reality of leadership: iso…

Dear Ray, Your concern is well founded. Employees look forward to surveys like they do a visit to the dentist! The Horsepower Survey, however, is an employee-focused survey to measure how rewarded employees feel about their work. It consists of sev…

This is a great read, a great story. I smiled the whole time as I read this. If this conversation is possible in your organization, then I'd say your leadership is trusted and transparent. Thanks for this story.
