Who are you?
I'm stepping off the known merry-go-round after acknowledging and accepting that my interests and purpose lie in helping others find work that resonates with them.

Good cultural fits, good interpersonal fits with managers and good task fit with ones strengths. The corporate world doesn't have to be as backward as it is.

Life is too short to be unhappy in an environment that eats up 70% of our waking hours.
What is your interest or involvement in employee engagement?
I am in the process of launching a new business that will better match individuals to managers and companies. (Seeking: social psychologists or organizational behavior experts if you happen to be reading this and are feeling the need to generously help.)

Hiring for Engagement

In the last post I stated a case for engaging employees. In a nutshell, competitive advantages for knowledge businesses come from ingenuity which can only be fostered when an employee is engaged.

The first step is making sure we get the right people on the bus. My starting point is to focus on fit. Engagement comes from a number of sources, but how well someone fits into our company is step one and within our control. I… Continue

The Case for Engagement

A century ago we were putting the screws to the Industrial Revolution. We revolutionized the revolution.

Growth and competitive advantages hinged largely on price. Thus the pattern we followed to maintain these was a logical one. We focused on the contributions that effected them and progressed from the easy solutions to the more difficult:

1. Work longer. Practices don’t change, you just do what you do for longer periods for the same pay.
2. Work smarter. A day only has so many hours so we cr… Continue

Boomers Are From Mars, Millenials Are From Venus

To quote Dennis Miller, "I don't mean to get off on a rant here, but..."

Enough already about managing the Millenials. The latest was a good blog post about pairing Boomers and Millenials from Towers Perrin but it broke this GenX camel's back and I had to throw my hat into the ring below. Whole post at SwimmingInTheDarkBlue.

A Tale of Two Job Postings: Burger King vs. Murder Burger

We want to hire extraordinary people and yet if you removed the names of most companies from the masthead you'd be hard pressed to differentiate one job post from another.

A tale of the tape comparison for identical jobs at two different burger joints. The first is from Burger King, the second from the aforementioned burger slingers in New Zealand called Murder Burger (yep, seriously).

The Lazy Art of Hiring

...We can all assess skills and experience by looking at a resume. And we can typically pick up on intelligence based on pedigree and some brief interviewing. But finding people that actually ‘fit in’ is crucial.

How do we assess that?

In the lazy, bureaucratic mindset we apply to hiring today it comes down to, at best, a ‘behavioral’ interview. But a prepared, outgoing individual can leap this hurdle. At worst we rely on our gut. If we aren’t completely revolted by the way the interviewee car… Continue

Hi Brent - love your "Who Are You?". Having just left BT after 12 years I feel a connection with what you've written and will dive into your words of wisdom more often. As for the picture, woah, looking pretty zippy there. Must change mine sometime soon :)

Brent,
Off-topic from your excellent blogpost . . . I'm finding that your mission statement, "my interests and purpose lie in helping others find work that resonates with them," is feeling like a fit for me as well. I need to figure out how best to pursue this. Any words of wisdom?

Hi Brent,
When I read "Life is too short to be unhappy in an environment that eats up 70% of our waking hours," I said to myself, Amen to that!
Welcome and I look forward to learning more from you about stepping off the merry-go-round.

What a fantastic image. I also visited your site and thought the most recent post on having your time wasted as a volunteer and the lessons for leadership was well stated.

I look very forward to your participation and involvement in this network as I think you have some wonderful perspective and experiences to offer us.

By the way, I love the image.

Appreciate the question--but what if you consider that there is more than one type of "true" engagement, and that different types of engagement may involve more or less spiritual, intellectual or participatory involvement?
