Hi Lynn I agree, coaching customers on sat surveys is bad practice and should stop. The resultant customer sat bonus is part of the problem and I believe it should stop too. In fact I don't approve of financial bonuses period. Increasingly I fin...

Rock and Roll Engagement

Joe Strummer is my musical hero. He fronted The Clash, who were, in my opinion, the greatest rock band to walk this earth. Joe Strummer was cool because he understood the power of people, he encouraged access to The Clash in a way that freaked the music execs. Him and Mick Jones wrote some powerful, great songs.

Strummer also said some powerful, great things. Here is a link to a short piece called… Continue

Mass Disengagement - But Are We Surprised?

The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development’s measure of job satisfaction has dropped from a score of 46 to 37 according to the latest UK Employee Outlook survey of 2,000 staff. More people (42 per cent) reported excessive pressures at work, compared to six months ago (38 per cent), while employees were also more likely to say they have seen increases in stress and conflict at work, as well as bullying by line managers.

Another interesting figure is a rise from 34 to 40 per cent of sta… Continue

Employee Engagement Crossing the Language Barrier

David Marklew has been in touch with a fantastic story of engagement at work. Engagement and recognition between two people who don’t even share a common language. It reinforces the fourth question from Marcus Buckingham’s First Break All the Rules. “In the last seven days, have I received recognition or praise for good work?” It’s simple and effective. It's Stop Doing Dumb Things to Customers in action. I love it… Continue

Spotting Patterns is Fun

A friend sent me a link to Wordle and I just couldn't resist. It's a word cloud generator. I tried it on my customer experience blog.

What did it tell me about April? Get, need and people feature highly, closely followed by engagement, integrity and questions. Little is bigger than big (I kinda like that). And, I need to stop writing stories about some guy. Have a look, have a play.

I'd like… Continue

Hi Doug,
Your picture with your beautiful daughter reminds me of the happy and harried days when my 3 kids were that young. That was the same time my husband and I were working intensely insanely - trying to be associate professors. Work was a huge part of life and so were the kids. Everything else was VERY much smaller. Now I watch my kids with their kids...The more things change...by the bye, you have pilates; I have hatha yoga. Bless them both!

18 feet sometimes higher depending if construction sets our cable higher. Its fun but hard on your knees, Especial if the poles are the green ones which is like climbing a rock. But if your a lineman for the power company climbing can be a daily thing. Lucky I'm with the phone company.

Let’s share favorite quotations that are somehow relevant to business. I frequently include them in letters, e-mails, proposals, and book reviews. They may not always provide a head-snapping revelation but do add some “seasoning” to the prose.
