Profile Information

Who are you?
"Listener" is how I have described myself and what I do for over a decade now. It is the most succinct name for what I do. Think of Communication - there is the talking side which is what most organizations do and there is the listening side which is done less well. So, listening is how I describe conducting employee research - surveys, interviews, focus groups - others tell me stuff and I listen to it and then I try to help others understand what I have heard. I put my heart into what I do so others will open theirs and share their experiences with me. It seems to work as I have been working successfully in this area for more than two decades.

The following is my career profile for those who like to see the facts.

I have been in the workforce for nearly forty years, the last twenty as a Communication/HR consultant specializing in research and measurement. My primary focus is on the employee experience in the workplace and how that experience relates to productivity and other business metrics.

The seven years I spent working on the Hewitt Associates Best Employers in Canada project (as reported in the Globe & Mail’s ROB magazine) provided me with the opportunity to work with leaders at all levels, from a wide spectrum of organizations, as they worked with their employee engagement results.

My greatest strength is in helping clients to make sense of the results; so that they aren’t buried in the data and left wondering what to do next.

I have helped clients develop action plans and strategies that focus on the activities that will maintain or improve engagement while remaining aligned with the business philosophy, goals and direction. This may include explaining the results and potential implications to senior leaders, advising and partnering with HR on strategic action planning, and/or training/aiding managers working with their divisional results.

I am fortunate to be working in an area that I love and that makes the best use of my educational credentials – I have a Masters degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology – and my professional credentials – CHRP (Certified Human Resources Professional) and CMC (Certified Management Consultant).

I am President and Senior Consultant at Douglas Communications Inc.

Before this I served as the Canadian Listening Leader at Hewitt Associates (Vancouver: 2001-2007), Canadian Leader of the Research and Measurement practice at Mercer (Vancouver: 1993-2000) and HR consultant at Mercer (Toronto: 1987-1992).

I am an active member of and have sat on the Boards of the BC Chapter of IABC and the BC Human Resources Management Association.

I sit on the following Boards:
Fraser River All Nations Aboriginal Society
Elders Medicine Whell Society
Skemcis Medicine Lodge Society

Engagement in the Emergency / Rescue / Security services sector

I am looking for examples of engagement experience (results) from those of you who have worked in the emergency / rescue / security service sector. It intrigues me and I want to build this sector in my client base.

So what intrigues me? Well, when I got down to the nitty griity of it when thinking of the differences between the traditional corporate world and the world of the police, firefighters, essentially the para-military type services, etc. - I realized that a simple turn of a… Continue

Business advice needed

Hello friends,

I need some advice. Basic information first - I am an independent consultant (20 years with two of the largest consulting firms in North America - so being a small business takes a bit of getting used to). I am well-respected in the business community (the engagement, HR and Communication community that is) and have a number of connections with other professionals whose business complements mine and whom I readily recommend (for example, my employee research may… Continue

When trying to improve engagement doesn't click...aka... Lessons Learned

As we know many organizations measure employee engagement. And, while most attempt to take action to maintain or improve employee engagement, there are quite a few seem to be making little positive progress. There are some really good stories of what has worked well in some organizations. I am interested in hearing some stories of the organizations that are really trying but not meeting with the success they are expecting - and your thoughts on what they aren't doing right.

Please… Continue

Engagement Surveys - Dealing with Contentious Verbatim Comments

Most surveys offer the respondent an opportunity to provide free-form verbatim comments at the end of a survey.

I have encountered some interesting situations and would like to know how others have handled or would suggest handling similar situations.

1. Issues of harassment have surfaced in the comments. There may or may not be names.

---How I've handled it: I contact the client to let them know that one/some employees have raised some serious workplace behavioural-related… Continue

Online Surveys - Some things to consider

The world of surveying has opened up considerably with the availability of internet hosting and data collection services. A quick search on surveys results in a fairly extensive list of survey hosting and data management websites. Colleagues and clients have sung the praises of some of the more popular sites; describing them as easy to use, fast to set up and oh yes, cheap!

Well, there are a few things to consider before establishing a working relationship with an online survey… Continue

Hello Jean!

Thanks for your welcome note.

In response to something you asked in a recent post, I have recently worked with RCMP, Border Guards and Conservation and Protection Officers (DFO).  If there are ways where I might be able to help with research or any questions you may have, please drop me a note,

cheers - David

Thanks Jean! Yes I hope the snow stops soon too...pretty soon we won't have much place left to shovel it aside. The roads are looking like a maze around here. I am  looking forward to learning lots and hope to add value to the community. Lisa

Hi Jean:
I have seen this on blogs but I am not sure it is built into the Ning platform.
That would be a good feature as would be an automatic twitter link.
It never hurts to add a quick comment and shows more engagement than just clicking a button.
I will check into this button idea.

Oh, a fellow songstress! Always happy to meet another whose life is but a song cue. Thank you for your warm welcome! And I would certainly also welcome your thoughts on the question I posted today re: the ROI of investing in engagement, training, etc. My resources seem rather outdated...

Nice to meet you and I look forward to continuing the conversation!
Meredith
