- Who are you?
- Joe Hungler is the Director of Operations at the Boys & Girls Club of Worcester and a National Training Associate for Boys & Girls Clubs of America. He has been recognized as the Program Professional and Management Professional of the Year by the Yankee Chapter of the Association of Boys & Girls Clubs Professionals. He was part of a team that was awarded the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Honor Award for Program Excellence for Best Overall Program with the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Nashua, NH in 1999. He has achieved the Distinguished Level of the Academy of Boys & Girls Club Professionals at both the Youth Development and Management categories. In 2006, he received the President’s Call to Service Award for his work with the Keystone Club, a teen leadership group.
Joe was awarded a Woodruff Fellowship and earned his Master’s in Human Resource Development from Clemson University as part of the first on-line cohort in 2006. He earned his B.S. in Mathematics at the University of Vermont in 1992.

- I am the Director of Operations of a youth serving non-profit and am always looking for better ways in which we can engage our employees.

Appreciate the question--but what if you consider that there is more than one type of "true" engagement, and that different types of engagement may involve more or less spiritual, intellectual or participatory involvement?
Create and support one language for your employees by clearly communicating the mission, values, and team agreements of your organization.
Say hello and ask them how their day is going.
Men get engaged when you acknowledge what they do, and women become engaged when you acknowledge who they are.

Finding a candidate with some staying power is such an awesome thing. There are a lot of candidates out there who are willing to stick with a good employer, and there are others who are just looking to build their resume.

I have written blogs for years but this is a new endeavor for me too. I think there is such a fine collection of people from such a rich range of diversity that we will learn from each other and even learn from what we say to each other.
Thanks for your input to my forum post. I noticed in your bio that you graduated from UVM. Were you from Vermont? My wife was born and raised in VT so I had to ask. Thanks again for all of your advice.

What an important organization to foster employee engagement for. Youth work and people who work with youth are nothing less than our future. All the best with this and I hope you get ideas, perspectives, and approaches to foster engagement.
