A pilot project: engaging employees in separate locations.
I created a Ning network for my staff members in May 2009. After an initial meeting with management, the idea was put on hold. In mid November 2009, management gave me word that I could go ahead and launch the Ning network I created in the summer....

- HI Jon, great to connect with you. I am actually working on a presentation for a staff meeting on Tuesday. The really odd thing is, I was able to convince management to adopt social media in the workplace, but offering the idea to staff is more challenging. Lots of great ideas on this network. ALL of us know more than ANY of us. And it is dangerous to know The Answer, since there are generally LOTS of possibilities for workplace improvements.
Remember: Nobody Ever Washes a Rental Car! Engagement is about perceived ownership and active involvement.
Ask people what they want to achieve, then help them achieve it.
