Continuing my interview with the famous literary critic, Robert Morris, here are my responses to his questions regarding (1) How to make employees feel appreciated, and (2) What to do if working for a toxic leader. Morris: In all of the major resea…

Judy, I was just reading your most recent blog entry, about the myth of work and life balance, and the great discussion that it stimulated. And I recalled that you had posted this prior entry back in August. It must have been a slow time since no on…

Thanks Doug, Tim, Mike, Dave and Wayne for your thoughtful comments. The topic is one most people relate to because "good" people are supposed to lead balanced lives, i.e. not give too much priority to one sector over another. But! It's very difficu…

Ah...the power of words to mislead! This is not an issue of rejecting EE; it is a recasting of the old idea of creating a Best Fit between what is very important to the employee and what the organization's culture is able to offer. In other words,…

Hi Judy - interesting. I've never really got balance (even though I enjoy Pilates!). It's too....pivotal for me. It feels too difficult to achieve that precarious state, the slightest speck will tilt the balance again, creating something unequal. I…

Good article on a tricky subject. It is easy to drift from a balance as you react to circumstances (home and business). I often point (and redirect myslef for that matter!) to Steven Covey's work around defining your 'principle centres', 'roles', '…

Who are you?
I tackle very large psychological issues by analyzing them and writing about the problem and suggesting solutions. For example, I published the first book about the psychology of women as women and not as women-as-not-men. Another topic was that of plateauing, getting stuck and not moving forward, in life as well as at work. In one book I described the psychology of entitlement and explained why it resulted from too much security and is a world-wide phenomenon and problem.

I work as a lecturer, a consultant, a researcher and writer.

I am a former professor of psychology and associate dean of the college of Literature, Science and the Arts at the University of Michigan. In 1981 I moved to La Jolla, California. and continue to research, write and lecture on the people related issues that I believe really matter and are not well understood.
What is your interest or involvement in employee engagement?
I published One Foot Out The Door (AMACOM 2007) which makes the case that high levels of commitment and engagement which result from high levels of mutual respect and trust between employees and their organization is key to financial success in a very competitive environment.

The Hapless Struggle: Trying to Meet All Your Responsibilities EQUALLY!

The famous literary critic, Robert Morris asked me some very interesting questions. Here is one regarding how to obtain a balanced life. After reading my answers to his questions, Bob added, "A cursory reading of the material indicates that it is remarkably solid in terms of substance and eloquent. No news there."
Thank you, Bob!

Morris: In your opinion, is it possible to balance what is most important in one’s career with what is most important in one’s personal life? If so, what to do?… Continue

Reward and Involve Employees During this Severe Recession

In my award winning book One Foot Out The Door, (How to Combat the Psychological Recession That’s Alienating Employees and Hurting American Business), AMACOM, 2008, I explain why the increased rate of change has led about half of employees to feel they no longer have control over what happens to them. The loss of control and the fact of massive layoffs leads to widespread fear and anxiety, lower pro… Continue

Memo to Managers

July 7, 2009

The majority of middle managers believe their job is to hit the numbers. But far fewer are comfortable with the idea that their job is to hit the numbers by keeping their people involved and enthused in bad times as well as good.

The importance of managing employees effectively becomes clearer if we ask: Which organization will hit its numbers?
One in which employees say, No one cares about what’s happening to me. I hate coming to work,
or one in which people say, We’reContinue

A Fool and His Money Are Soon Parted (Because) There's A Sucker Born Every Minute

Ever since Bernie Madoff ceased being the Philanthropic Saint and became Bernie Made-off-With-My-Money, I’ve been thinking about why so many of us gleefully race…to be conned.

There are, of course, many reasons for our eager plunge into stupidity. Arguably, the most obvious was immortalized by Willie Sutton who, when asked, Why do you rob banks?,Continue

Can YOU Handle the Truth?

That something is published does not make it true.

April 22, 2009

I’m not on anyone’s list to receive emails or blogs or even solicitations for money from extremely right wing, politically conservative organizations or their counterparts, organizations whose members hold equally passionate liberal views. But a few of my friends are very partisan and actively involved in politics. Lately several of these friends have sent me extremely conservative blogs.

It’s important to acknowledge th… Continue

Hi Judy. I really enjoyed your post on balance. As you suggest, I try to be good, some of the time, but I rarely balance things well. I tend towards trying to do the right things for the right reasons. I hope that guides me and in turn, I have a family and good friends not afraid to let me know if my wheels need to turn in a different direction. I look forward to reading more from you soon. Have a great day. Doug

Hi Judy,

Not that you would abuse it, but there is no method for members to send group emails as the lists have been abused on other networks.

Here are some options:

One way to let people know what's up is to write a short blog post and this will appear on the front page of the site until quite a few other blogs are written. It will also be on your own page.

You can write your own email with anyone you specified as a friend too and this will go just to the people you want to notify. It then become very focused and targeted as opposed to an email to 210 members.

I am sure you don't want to start receiving email notifications from 209 other people on the network.

I do compile a bi-weekly newsletter/update if you want me to insert a line or two on some occasion let me know.

In addition, another option, you could start a forum on the topic of engagement in Asia.

Let me know if I can be of further assistance.

Irene just sent a copy of your book which I plan to read this weekend and will then post a review of it sometime next week on the US, UK, and Canadian Web sites of both Amazon and Borders. It's great to have you involved with the EE Network, with both feet "in the door." It will be a delight for me to communicate with you in months and years to come.

Meanwhile, best wishes and warmest regards, Bob
