At EMC, we're experiencing wonders by using social media for employee engagement. On our internal social network, we have more than 60% of the company connecting, collaborating, sharing, mentoring, and innovating. The employees have created over 1...
Wow there's some good stuff in here. I suggest that this bottom 10% may not self correct by leaving of their own accord. Increasingly we are seeing that these people (oh dear I'm starting to create an underclass here....tread carefully) tend to ha...
I don't think any officially mandated culling policy is a good idea at all. See the above reasons. If managers give timely and accurate performance appraisals on under-achieving employees, chances are, they'll see the handwriting on the wall (as w...
From what I have been reading about employee engagement I think the answer to your question may be Yes. Employee engagement is not something employers or their employees do. Employee engagement is something employers get in return for doing all ...
On introducing social networks, I'm experimenting currently with a culture that has traditionally been hierarchical and siloed, and has a firmly stated objective to become unified, with more devolved leadership (sound familiar, anyone!?). With cu...

Google's #1 Again!

At the Employee Factor, we love Google. Why? Google made Fortune's "100 Best Companies to Work For" 2008 list. That’s number one for the second year running and it seems to me that you can’t be number one unless you have a happy and engaged workforce.

After all, as part of the selection procedure, 400 employees (selected at random) had to answer a 57-question survey that covered the gamut from job satisfac

To Cull or Not to Cull Bottom Perfomers...

At the Employee Factor, we thought we should ask - should you "cull or not cull" your bottom performers.

Hi Judy, a year later I'm responding! We use the Q12 survey from Gallup, it is a very key measure for us, and we spend a considerable amount of time with action plans around the 12 Q's.

Hi Judy,

I was interested to read the discussion thread you started around social media.

I've since set up a group on social media in the workplace. It would be great if you could stop by.

Warren - thanks for clarifying! Wow, it certainly sounds like you have your work cut out for you. You are right the government is doing some very interesting things around engagement. In fact, Canada Post is doing leading edge engagement work as well.

I would love to have a dialogue with you. We have done engagement work in the banking sector which is also a very difficult challenge as many of the workers are unionized and it is difficult to build engaged employees who deliver banking products and services.

Let me know if there is a time next week. I would be happy to call you to discuss what you are doing.

Judy I apologize for causing confusion. But I don't work for the ANZ bank. I used to work for a bank later acquired by them, and my sister does - but I don't. I'd meant to associate with the NZ part of the banks name. My apologies.
However I'd still be very keen to establish dialogue with you. I work in central government on employee engagement. I spent much of the past year getting government agencies on board using the survey tool and our focus is intensively on building engagement. After all its not about the measurement, but what we do in response.

We have established some baselines and clearly we have some significant challenges ahead in terms of building from fairly low starting points. So I'm keen to hear of case studies of transformations - particularly in the government context if you know of any. I understand the Canadian government has done some good work in this area. We are actually using a Canadian government model (Citizens First) as the basis to measure our customer engagement.
I look forward to sharing with you.

Hi Judy from NZ. The smaller end of the ANZ bank you blogged about earlier in the year. I enjoyed your recent blog posts too. Life is more fun when we turn things on their heads.
I also came across your very good media presentation on Youtube many weeks back. Its very nice to meet the creator of that, which really inspired me. Great job Judy!

Nice to see you here. At some point, in the next week I'd like to run an idea by you for a book I'm working on. Nothing urgent.

Hi Judy - Thanks for the welcome. I am currently working on a post that should give you some insight into what we are doing at MSNBC.com with respect to employee engagement.

Stay tuned - I'm currently buried in fiscal planning for next year.
