This is going to sound stupid and lame.. but I would say the best thing is to be open, honest and to spend time with them in an unstructured way. Initially there is bound to be anger and anxiety, confusion, etc. But if the CEO can present WHY he had…

These are some good tips. Basically I see it this way - If changes are happening within you organization you may have absolutely no control over what might happen. What you can control is how you deal with it. If you see the writing on the wall the…

In fact a few of those close to me have indeed lost jobs recently. I myself was laid off back when the tech bubble burst. I agree with your input Terrence, and it is similar advice to what I gave to those who have lost jobs recently. I can't over em…

The New York Times has an article that suggests that many people are turning towards setting up business for themselves. It seemed ironic because many of my friends who were on their own found that business is not easy to get. But they were largely…

Mathai, The "unthinkable" is the reality for millions of people right now, with many more to come before this downturn is over. Re your friends who are seriously worried, here are a few ideas. I'm sure others will weigh in with more. 1. Don't let…

I have lots of friends who are seriously worried about losing their jobs. It apears that we got used to the idea that a JOB is a core part of our identity. Not so long ago, "working class" was a derogatory term. Now it seems that it has come a full…

Profile Information

Who are you?
A psychologist with about a decade of teaching experience in Organizational Behaviour at XLRI, Jamshedpur. Right now, I run a consulting firm in Bangalore, where our focus is on how knowledge is created, packaged, transmitted and utilized.

Currently thinking about how people feel deeply insecure about losing a job. How can people find meaning and satisfaction in life OUTSIDE their workplace?
What is your interest or involvement in employee engagement?
Have spent a lot of time trying to understand the assumptions behind organizations. Do we believe employees are self motivated, honest, etc. Or do we believe that if we do not put pressure and constant monitoring they will goof of? What did Peter Drucker mean when he said that organizations have to learn from NON-Profit Organizations? What is the difference between work that is paid for and voluntary work? Does the employee EXPERIENCE them as different?

Mathai:

I am pleased you joined the employee engagement network and love how you have gotten involved already. I visited the TalkShop and was impressed with the approach and perspective. I also liked your "Random thoughts" while sitting on a fragile raft. I hope you will continue to stay involved and active in this network as you obviously have a lot to offer us. Let me know how I can be of assistance.

Many organizations have seen their voluntary turnover numbers greatly decline during the past 18months (our recessionary window). However, there are two great articles that are indicating that the turnover wave is coming. Those organizations with di…

Ah, the script for a boss! That is easy, but a long way from the traditional one. First, I suggest the boss do a quick read of Douglas McGregor's "The Human Side of Enterprise" to gain an understanding of the theory behind X and Y. Then commit the…

My view on this is that where you treat employee engagement like a ‘big bang’ corporate change programme it will always carry a significant risk of turning into an ‘organisational Vietnam’. Don’t go to war in the first place! Do it by taking lots a…
