Profile Information

Who are you?
An internal communications practitioner with broad consulting, embedded, and in-house experience, who takes a non-linear view of employee engagement. My previous background (prior to MBA studies at LBS where I did my thesis on organisational communication) was as a political campaign manager, and I thus see the power of personal choice as the ultimate driver of engagement and ultimate filter of communication.
What is your interest or involvement in employee engagement?
It is the biggest buzzword in the internal communication and people management discipline, yet it's measurement is often wielded as a weapon. It is presented as some kind of moral virtue, but can better be interpreted as any of a number of different phases of relationship with an organisation.

Hey Mike:

I can't be much of a help with publications. I am working hard at cutting out publications and publish directly through my blog and network, etc. I used to write for IHRIM and some other journals but found I prefer control of what I write, when I write, how I write, and the people I write for or with.

I have taken time but have built up over 1800 members on the network, 8200 RSS subscribers for my blog/site and about 8000 daily page views on the blog.

After looking at the blog I would like to edit your comments, add the 4 forms of engagement piece, and offer a link to your site. This may appear within the next 2 weeks or it will be in the New Year. Let me know if it is okay to repost your blog post.

Hi David...

There's much to say--the start point is that I spent a good year and a half blogging about this stuff (http://CommsOffensive325.blogharbor,com) and I've been looking for conversations and forums to inject it into--with varying degrees of frustration.

The short answer to my non-linear view of engagement: that I think the idea the path between employee hostility and helpfulness is a straight line called "engagement" is total rubbish. Rather, I see "engagement" as a willingness to connect through some sort of relationship, which can either be hostile or helpful, passive or active, possessive or bereft of long-term commitment, and solitary or collective.

My piece on my Employee Engagement blog discusses in some detail, but I think there's room for more elaboration if we can detect some appetite.

As for my background--while I have more than 10 years of internal communication experience, mainly in Europe, I managed political campaigns in the US for 10 years as well, where I saw other patterns and models of engagement emerge around candidates and issues.

That background gives me some perspective around the whole "engagement as moral virtue" piece--for it is impossible for anyone actively in a relationship to be disengaged, whether they are hostile, helpful or hopeless.

Ultimately, I think this issue has been horribly mispositioned in the communications and management press, and that professionals need access to new models and vocabularies that don't treat engagement solely as an employee issue, and solely as a matter of right and wrong.
