Richard, This is most unfortunate news. I did want to point out though that the rate (23 suicides in 18 months or about 15 per yr per 100,000 employees at France Telecom) is comparable or lower than suicide rates in many European countries (and ma...

Sorry about my tone. As you say, Winters was an exceptional manager of exemplary character and there are clearly leadership lessons to be gleaned from film. I guess "business / war" analogies put me on edge. There is a time in the life of the busi...

I'm a big fan of the mini-series, Dick Winters, America, Freedom, and apple pie - but this is pretty retro-grade leadership thinking. Why not hold up Henry Ford or Frederick Taylor as paragons of leadership? Yes. Winters excelled as a strategic t...

I agree with David's point that everyone must own their own engagement. As for HR, I agree with Richard's statement: "No amount of HR initiatives or programs will compensate for the words and actions of your managers. That is not to say that you...

I am more pervasive on this. EVERYONE OWNS EMPLOYEE ENGAGEMENT. If employees don't own their engagement then all else is future. If managers and leaders don't own engagement then it is not connected to a wider perspective and if owners don't own...

Just to twist it around a bit....the ultimate owners are the operators. It is up to the others noted above to support the operators in their quest to engage themselves--if those others in power know what's good for the business.

Good points Richard -- we've had success in getting C-Level support for programs by explaining the "what's in it for me" for the different execs at the boardroom table: - the CMO should care because engaged employees are the most effective brand ...

Interesting question. It reminds me of the old "Who own Quality?" debate of a bygone era. I agree that managers own it, and the ultimate ownership resides with the CEO. Terry

Five Take-Away Lessons in Employee Engagement from the TV Mini-Series ‘Band of Brothers’.

I recently re-watched the brilliant TV mini-series 'Band of Brothers'. If you haven't seen this DVD series, it's the story of Easy Company, the 506th regiment of the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army - and their journey from their D-Day landing on Utah beach through to the eventual surrender of Nazi Germany at the end of WWII.

Although it is clearly not a programme about 'employee engagement', it is definitely a programme about 'people engagement', and there are many observational lessons… Continue

Lessons in Employee Engagement from Steve Jobs and Steve Jones

I've just returned from a few days holiday in Lisbon.

On the way out, I picked up a couple of books at the airport which could not have been more different, yet both offered a unique insight into the world of Employee Engagement.

The first book was Cityboy. Cityboy is a somewhat fictitious account of Steve Jones, a merchant banker from the Square Mile in the City of London. Although the book is fictitious, I'm confident it's grounded in truth, and is… Continue

Who Owns Employee Engagement in Your Company?

Mention employee engagement to most managers, and the usual reaction is “that’s an HR issue”.

Nothing could be further from the truth…

Employee engagement is the responsibility of every manager and leader in your organization. The very success of your company rests on how engaged your managers can make your employees feel.

Employee engagement is about connecting the hearts and minds of your employees with the values and vision of your company. It’s about getting your employees to feel more co… Continue

A few random thoughts about employee engagement

Over the past few days, I've posted a few comments on blogs around the world. Some comments are in response to the MacLoed report, some are general observations about Employee Engagement.

I thought I'd summarise my thoughts here in one fresh blog post. It's a bit random, but may offer something different.

1. The importance of managers in Employee Engagement

"One thing comes to mind reading your post, and that is the importance of managers (and leaders) to create engagement in their te… Continue

What Do You Really Want in Your Business? Better Leaders or More Engaged Employees?

There is an old adage in marketing which says that a customer who buys a quarter-inch drill, doesn't actually want a quarter-inch drill, they want a quarter-inch hole.
The same can be said of leadership.
Let me suggest when your company invests in a leadership development programme, it isn't just better leaders you want, it is better followers.
You want more engaged, passionate and driven employees who are focused on delivering extraordinary value and results for your prospects and customers.
Th… Continue
