I couldn't help but sharing this with this group when I saw it this morning (9 Oct 2009) and hope this is appropriate for all of you. Some of my company's clients tell me that external motivation doesn't really work. Rewards don't matter to their...

One of the best engagement exercises I use when working with groups is to divide people into small groups of 3 or 4 and ask them to produce flipchart size posters of the successes they have had at work in the last six months. I'll allow one "hitti...

Hi Samantha, I like the workshop example. It is similar to a practice which a mentor taught me for a group/team leader to involve everyone with their hearts and minds (engage) everyday. It was leading 5 simple steps of Thank, Invite, Re-Ask, Feed...

Hi Samantha

I have just joined this group and this club and identified you as a fellow UK resident. I am a (self) published auther and have had one or two articles published, but am looking to get more published and on a more regular basis. Can you give me any tips as to how and where I could go to get this done? (Most magazines I read, seem to have their own resident correspondents.)

Thanks
Bay

Thank you wholeheartedly Samantha, that's very kind of you.

I'll get back to your page very soon and really read your blogs which I only had time to scan. They looked very interesting and worthwhile.

Best to you,

Judy

Hello Samantha,
Welcome to the EE Network!

I see you joined some groups too, including Manager Tools. Very good. You are engaging quickly.

I like your point that "everyone has a story, and that story is key to their motivation in life." Stories are powerful vehicles for learning.

Recognition is important, but possibly not in the way you think. Rewards have negative effects down the road no matter how good they look. On this subject, read Alfie Kohn's "Punished by Rewards". I managed people for over 30 years. In order to s...

Angela, I think recognition is always essential but we have to look at the deeper reason why. Reward and recognition confirms value. Every human being wants to know, "Does my life matter?" This is the questions we help answer when we reward and re...
