Who are you?
My husband, Charles, and I founded Rivetmaker Consulting. I've been a nurse, working primarily in the field of behavioral health, for the past 28 years. Charles is a psychotherapist. We applied our experiences facilitating behavioral change in clinical settings to create a system for engaging performance at work. We show executives how to use three dimensions - communication, group dynamics, and context - to create and sustain engagement by becoming cohesive leaders.

Our blog,The Engage Sage, at www.engagesage.com gives us a forum to illustrate the experiences that trigger engagement. We also created a behavioral measure of employee engagement called the EAGER assessment - You can take it online for free at http://www.rivetmaker.com/eagerAssessment.htm
What is your interest or involvement in employee engagement?

Dear Susan,

Thanks for making contact. If you'd like a sneak peek at Primal Management I could send you a couple of chapters. All I need is an email address.

Best Regards,

Paul Herr

You don't prepare for "the improvisation", you prepare to be able to improvise.
It's a bit like training for a competition: you cannot foresee all that will happen, but you should try to get there as fit as possible.
Shooting home now, we'll continue our discussion another time! Have a great end of 2008 and beginning of 2009!

What do consultants and clowns have in common?
Well, the ability to understand other people, to be empathic, to "perform". I think of a presentation as a show, in a way: you need to deliver a message, entertaining your audience at the same time.
I also find that if you manage to work with a smile, you accomplish much more - that's true in the office and with clients.
I think that being serious and behaving seriously are very distinct things. The best clowns and the best consultants manage to be serious when it comes to preparing and delivering, but they don't behave too seriously when they deliver.
And it is maybe a paradox, but you can only afford not to be too serious, when you have prepared seriously before.
I am always sceptical when I see people hiding behind a "serious professional" mask: if you cannot laugh, either there's something you are not telling me, or you don't trust me, or you are trying to disguise some weakness.

Thank you Susan.
Yes, my work is interesting, and so is my work as volunteer hospital clown. I actually think that clowning and consulting have a lot in common, more than one would think ;)

Susan,

Thanks for sharing your article with me on maximizing employee engagement. I read it and found it very informative and also very consistent with my research to identify levers that enhance employee engagement. Most of this research has been quantitative stuff and has focused on the relationship betweenthe direct supervisor and his or or her work group. It is often referrred to as linkage research (or at least this is how Wiley and Schnieder reefer to it) because its aim is to link leadership pratice with employee and then customer outcomes. The material in your article is very consistent with the learnings from this research.

I found it interesting you quoted William Glasser. He was a mentor of mine way back when (I think it was the early 80's but several of my neurons have died so I can't be certain). In any case, when I write of enabling engagement I use the very same language you do - employees work to meet their needs and if they are able to do this they develop feelings of efficacy and optimism and this in turn causes them to become more and more engaged in their work.

Anyway, it was a pleasure reading your article and I look forward to having more conversations with you in the futurer.
