Tim, You and I definitely think alike on this issue. I believe that the way to avoid one size fits all is FOCUS . . . flexbility, open communciation, creativity, understanding and using everyone's strengths.

Ben's success is awesome. That there are people who actually use 100% of their brainpower is suitable for Ripley's. (Unless Ben is referring to those who use 100% of the only 10% we humans are thought to use, on average). My general definition of...

Is multi-generational employee engagement possible?

Quite a few respondents to my Why Employee Engagement Doesn't Work survey noted generational differences as a major cause. Comments ranged from

Generation Y doesn't seem to know what 'engagement' means. to

Boomers are looking to retire; why should they engage?

and several in between!

In the study, Engaging the 21st Century Multi-Generational Workforce, conducted for MetLife Mature Market Institute by the Sloan Center on Aging and Work (Boston College), I came acro… Continue

Who's in the way of employee engagement? Leaders and managers, maybe

The survey results keep coming in. (A full report will be available after 5/22.) Feel free, please, to add your thoughts.

The reasons people believe employee engagement doesn't (always) work fall into clumps. Yesterday I discussed and made recommendations regarding the biggest clump of reasons: unclear definition of EE.

Today let's cluster the 2nd most frequent reason employee engagement doesn't work: leaders and managers aren't prepared.

Reasons fell into these related areas:

* Leaders don'… Continue

Why (some believe) employee engagement doesn't work

Lately a number of my clients, colleagues, and talkers at the coffee shop are commenting that Employee Engagement may be getting too big for its britches.

I would stop talking to employees and start listening to them. Find out what they want and how they want it. Find out how they think would be the best way to get it and help them to get it. They will have concerns, suggestions, complaints, and que...

Jason, Thanks. I agree that feeling in control is big. Also think the mistake with executive communications comes down to " It's not what you say, it's what people hear." The traditional "messaging" often fails on the latter. Lois
