With 150 direct reports managers would need an algorithm to manage. Surely that is unrealistic even in a less traditional sense of what 'a manager' does. The Victorian Police Commissioner created waves by changing her direct reports from 3 to 23. ...

Who are you?
I live in Wellington, New Zealand and work for a central government department in organisation development and strategic HR. My major areas of focus are on employee engagement and recruitment.
What is your interest or involvement in employee engagement?
Much of my role as a Senior Consultant in a central government agency in New Zealand is to advocate and facilitate the use of employee engagement in government agencies. We have over 20,000 employees in around 20 agencies being surveyed this year. Building engagement across the system is what gets me out of bed each day.

Warren - hello from Toronto! Thank you very much for your message. It is so nice to meet someone from ANZ Bank. We have actually used your bank (on a benchmarking tour we ran) as an example of a financial institution that is really innovating around the customer experience! Thank you so much for your comments around our YouTube video. We loved producing it and it certainly has provided interesting conversation around how to engage "people".

I would love to hear about what ANZ is doing in the employee engagement realm. I know that have had some successes, as I blogged about it a while ago. Any innovating ideas?

Thanks again for reaching out,

Hi Warren, and thanks for connecting our networks here. I've read several of your comments in discussions, and agree that we have very similar viewpoints. I look forward to learning from you, and "engaging" in the dialogue here (bad joke, I know - but it's really late here in the states!).

cheers,
Claudia

HI Warren

This publication refers to the Scottish Executive which is like the Civil Service which supports the Scottish Parliament. Since this publication came out we have had a change of government from Labour to Scottish Nationalist Party. I am sure this wil have an effect as they want to make changes, but I can't say I have seen anything yet. The Scottish Nationa Health Service and Royal Bank of Scotland are doing a lot of work in this area. Warren,
It is a good picture even if it is from Australia! Thanks for the compliment about the network. I hope this will be a very active and helpful network that become the go to place for all those interested in employee engagement.

If you are going to dream, you might as well dream big.

It has been so long since I have been to New Zealand and Australia, I hope to visit there again in a few years.

Welcome Warren
(OK, I like alliteration, sometimes I just can't help myself.) We now have New Zealand represented from Auckland to Wellington. I love the picture with the white cup, I have a white cup of coffee beside my computer in Winnipeg right now.
I look forward to your input into the network and encourage you to participate in whatever way feels right to you.

Thanks a lot for your help ! I actually did have a look on Gallup's 12 Questions, the only worry is that it measures more the enablers of employee engagement than employee engagement itself. I have however grouped the items into themes, and only o...
