In my last post, I mentioned what I think of as David Zinger’s call to action on employee engagement:
“Employee engagement is an experience to be lived not a problem to be solved.”
So what does living employee engagement look like from David’s point… Continue

I highly recommend seeing The Blind Side, a movie about Baltimore Ravens’ offensive tackle, Michael Oher. It’s worth the price of the ticket alone to see Sandra Bullock’s tour-de-force performance as Michael’s adoptive mom, Leanne Tuohy. What I especially like about the movie is that it shows how the right social environment helps people thrive in life.
I don’t want to give away the story so let me just say in a nutshell that it was Leanne Tuohy who reached out to Mi… Continue

Resilience is a crucial characteristic in this unpredictable world. Trees survive terrible storms if they can bend in the wind. Species who cannot adapt to new conditions die out. The natural world’s proclivity toward flexibility is also rewarded in humans. Thomas Edison once said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Eventually, resilient individuals can achieve success, sometimes after hundreds of attempts at their dream. At its core, resilience is the spark of det… Continue
What are the key factors for employee engagement? I and others have written at length on this topic. I believe one key factor for employee engagement is creating an environment in which employees want to engage through strategic appreciation of employee efforts. But there are many factors that feed a truly engaging environment.
Recent research… Continue

Many a times, I find that HR folks rush too fast to make employee engagement metrics a part of KPIs or balanced scorecards. The idea is that there should be a “carrot” to ensure that managers take accountability for their people, otherwise they won’t spend time on open dialogue with their teams and co-create action plans for improvement in engagement levels. I was recently asked if the carrot and stick ap… Continue

After 10 years of building an employee satisfaction culture at Prestwick House we surveyed our customers. Two separate groups surveyed at two different times of year and both groups responded similarly to the question,"Would you recommend this company to your colleagues?"
I am a consumer too. I consume a lot of services like banking, telecom, insurance, retail shopping, medical etc. When I look back and think what draws me repeatedly to some service providers, I realize it's not usually the product. The product is almost similar. Price could play a role, but "search" costs are high. Product and pricing are mere hygiene factors - necessary to keep you in the game. What brings me back is "People".
Ultimately, all service organizations are "people businesses". Thin… Continue

Employee motivation is one of the key components of employee engagement. Employees who are motivated are willing to invest discretionary effort to go above and beyond the call of duty. They are more likely to go the extra mile to help the organization succeed.
There are a variety of ways in which companies and managers seek to motivate their employees. Some of these succeed and some don't. I thought it will be a good idea to jot down a few basic principles or broad themes you should keep in min… Continue
