The days of command style leadership are long gone, yet surprisingly many leaders still use this style of leadership, especially when times are tough and organizations need to stay lean.
Of course every style of leadership is appropriate according to the situation, but some people do not know how to balance all styles of leadership for the person and situation.
The best style of leadership is participative leadership as this is what drives autonomous teamwork in an organization. Engaged autono…

I received a hand written thank you note for a project I did a few months ago. It was not only a pleasant surprise, but one that has maintained some impact after several months. I’m of the age that when I first started in work, we used to give recognition through hand written cards and notes on a regular (ok, maybe not so regular) basis. With the advent of e-mail and electronic forms of communication, the hand written thank you has gone the way of the pay phone – not quite dead, but pretty close…

I bet you started your morning looking at your daytimer, blackberry, outlook calendar, covey planner or whichever of the many tools and resources we have for managing our time.
Did you look at your actions, your "to do" list for today? Actions are tactics, processes to achieve our goals.
I have to be honest in saying I've never been one to totally master the use of my time like a fine tuned resource. It is something I work on each and every day. My day tends to expand as my right brain fills w…

We all have destinations in mind, getting to work, driving home, going to your usual clients. A destination can even mean reaching someone at a different level, tuning in, being able to influence someone to be more responsive.
When was the last time you approached your destination from a different direction? Even a geography change can mix things up a bit. Recently on vacation I decided to sit on the other side of the boat for our sunset cruise around the lake. I was surprised to see things fro…

Are you empowering others each time you speak? Have you noticed that whenever you talk to someone, the energy seems to fade away and the other person seems uninterested? Then after the interaction there is a feeling of sadness and your enthusiasm is simply gone. If these things happen, then it is time to analyze yourself and work on your empowering skills.
On the other hand, there are those people that whenever you talk to them, you feel energized and inspired. You suddenly seem to be excited to…

It is true that when you empower other people, you are not only influencing them, but you also empower the people they influence. So when you empower another person, you are actually giving him the power to accomplish something. Thus, you are basically giving others the ability to empower, too.
But how will you be able to empower another person? The truth is empowerment is the product of responsibility and authority. When you empower someone, you must also give him the authority to make decisio…

You can empower yourself if you have the knowledge of who you really are and what your real purpose in life is. But it is also important that we touch the lives of other people in order for our lives to be more meaningful. You should get more out of your life. One way of accomplishing this is extending yourself to others who need help. This way, you are empowering others with your life.
But it is also important that you analyze first your self if you are really a source of empowerment to others…

Your behavior as a manager as well as your approach to life in general will greatly affect your success or ultimate failure. That is why it is important to have various styles of behaviors and a wide range of approach. This gives you flexibility and increases your choices in your everyday dealings with other people. It will also help you in the long run in achieving success.
For most managers, they usually prefer to use the natural style of influence. But for the flexible managers, they usually…

As a leader, you may have different goals and you want to achieve them your way. You may be either in charge of a team and want to make the best decisions, or you may also be a leader who wants to motivate members to be more productive. Or you could be someone who wants to display your leadership skills to people who are not showing obedience. These different scenarios define your leadership style.
Being a leader means having to motivate people to be more productive, and in some cases, change d…

Hi.
I just found this great link with a very interesting topic.
http://betterworldmovement.com/2009/07/Motivation-or-Inspiration/
"Motivation is something that comes from within. As a manager or leader, I dont believe I can motivate you to do something, especially something that you aren’t interested in doing. Motivation is completely personal.
What I CAN do is to create an environment that fost…

I have two children, both boys, and they are a blessing. Every day I learn from them probably more than they learn from me. Sometimes I learn positive things about myself and at other times I gain less flattering insights; and then sometimes they provide me flashes of brilliance that are timely and relate to my work. After all children are just small adults. This is one of those moments.
My oldest was 7 years old and my youngest was 4 years old. We were on vacation and came upon a rock climbing…

Several studies are reporting increased levels of engagement.
The
Sunday Times reported the employees at the companies that appear on the Best Companies to Work For list:
“Employee engagement remained steady at 71%. Workers are still as committed and motivated as they were and some even more so. Although people are worried about job security they are not blaming their company for…

In this excellent
BusinessWeek article on
employee engagement in a recession, Robert Polet, CEO of Gucci, made the statement:
"Employees need to understand both current and long-term direction, as well their role in it, to remain motivated and engaged."
I agree. In fact, this is a best practice we encourage through strategic recognition - tie every employee recognition directly to a strategic goal c…

Have you considered the different forms of employee recognition? I don’t mean incentives vs. rewards, etc. I mean the different types of recognition employees (at all levels) need. Gallup recently released a report on
Building Engagement in This Economic Crisis. James K. Harter, Ph.D, Gallup’s chief scientist of workplace management and well-being, put it this way:
"In good times, employee engagement is…

A business owner asked me whether he should be concerned about leadership before management or how the two interact. We worked together to find an approach that would work for him. From my experience, it’s helpful to develop a coherent strategy that builds leaders and then managers based on their interests. In this way companies can hire and staff positions based on what people really excel at.
Leadership development refers to building on people’s existing strengths to help them become leaders…

I'm a recent member, thanks to my brief association with Paul Herr, author of "Primal Management", a book which delivers the tools to fix the failing management structure of Corporate America, by focusing on what really drives employee motivation; and ultimately a company's success.
Hopefully, everyone in this network is familiar with his work. Suffice to say, it's a book which should be ingrained in our business culture, the sooner the better. We're witnessing one of the worst economic periods…
