Highly Engaged Parishes

Are any of you involved with engagement at your place of worship? I've been asked by my pastor to work with him, his staff and other lay leaders on a parish-wide engagement initiative. To help get everyone's thinking juices flowing, we are all reading a book called Growing An Engaged Church by Albert L. Winseman, published by Gallup Press. I like Winseman's subtitle: How to stop "Doing Church"Continue

Drucker on Engagement

Dr Bill Cohen, a disciple of the late great Peter Drucker, has a blog entry on his teacher's model of engagement. There are four key points: 1. Hire & Promote carefully 2. Set high standards that challenge people to high levels of performance 3. Provide information so that each employee "knows and understands how what he does contributes to the work of the entire organization, and… Continue

Funny People - Movie Review

Last night, I went to see the new Adam Sandler movie "Funny People" expecting to be entertained. But I didn't expect a movie about engagement. If you are a fan of Sandler, as I am, you will not find another Zohan or Happy Gilmore or Billy Madison in this new bittersweet comedy from director Judd ("40 Year Old Virgin") Apatow. Instead, Sandler plays a Hollywood comedy star who has made millions but has lost his vital spark. He is angry, lonely, and lost in middle-age. Plus he has just been told… Continue

"Full Engagement" - Investing Your Energy

At LinkedIn, Melanie Bryan shared a link to an article about productivity consultant Jim Loehr that is worth reading. Melanie asks: Is managing your energy more productive than managing your time? It's a good question. I especially like this quote from Loehr: "It’s not how many hours you put in with a client or on a project. It’s the quantity and quality of your energy — your focus and force — that determine whether that time is valuable. We c… Continue

Treat Employees Better, Not Worse, In This Economy

Came across a good little article about the importance of treating people better, not worse, in this bad economy. Makes sense, right? The sad fact is that many Managers covey an attitude toward their staffs that can be summed up: "Be thankful you still have a job." The unstated sub-title being, "And don't screw anything up, or you'll be o… Continue

Nice weather. No job. Life is good.

A couple weeks ago, a friend of mine sent this message: "Nice weather. No job. Life is good." Not exactly a haiku, but refreshing. What a great attitude, in the face of the worst economic downturn of our lives. If you were to write your own haiku-like message about your situation, what would it be? Continue

Engaging in Mutual Support

It's tough out there in this downturn if you have lost your job. However, there is a very bright spot. It's people helping one another. One manifestation is the JobAngels idea started by Mark Stelzner. Another is the job search support group phenomenon where little groups are springing up all over the country, designed by the members, for the members. I've helped to start oneContinue

The Engaging Manager

Legendary CEO Jack Welch is known for a number of his management concepts and practices, including the 4 E Model that talks about several key aspects of leaders: Energy - Leaders have high energy Energizers - Leaders know how to energize others to perform Edge - Leaders have a competitive edge Execute - Leaders can get stuff done Interestingly, another E, engaging people, is not there. Maybe it's "in there" somewhere, perhaps under… Continue

The Holidays, The Downturn, and Employee Engagement

What are you doing to keep your spirits up? The spirits of others? For many people, this is a very special time of year. It always has been so for me. And even having been downsized three weeks ago, I still eagerly anticipate Thanksgiving Day, Christmas, and New Year's. Articles have appeared in the past week about the fate of holiday office parties. Some are being cut back to a more modest scale; some are being cut out all together. I sent an email to several of my former colleagues who were… Continue

Angela, I think recognition is always essential but we have to look at the deeper reason why. Reward and recognition confirms value. Every human being wants to know, "Does my life matter?" This is the questions we help answer when we reward and re...
