The BBC have recently screened a series entitled the Choir. I urge those of you who haven't come across it to investigate.
One man, Gareth Malone, takes up the challenge of engaging the community of an unfashionable housing estate a few miles from London in coming together through music. The series shows how he recruits and shapes the choir from absolute beginners through to performing a concert in front of a 1000 plus audience.
You do not need to love music to appreciate how uniting a community with a common cause delivers huge benefits. It also illustrates that engagement doesn't just happen. Gareth has enormous passion for music and people and goes to great lengths to engage everyone from schools through to the retired, the local boxing club and the likely lads and lasses from the local pub. Truly inspirational!
Comments especially welcome from any of you that have shared the experience.
