The Employee Engagement Network

Mike King writes "Leadership is about people .." and he's 100% correct. You cannot lead if there is no-one to be engaged and led.

On LearnThis Mike provides 8 articles on engaging leadership ... and a whole host of other articles. Great stuff!

David, I agree...We all have lots of hope for Obama but hopefully we will recognize our responsibilities. My hope is that his community organizing background will serve him in new and innovative ways in the white house, to mobilize this nation and wake it up from its coma. The increase in voters has was a good beginning, Now we need to roll up our sleeves and get busy.

Thanks DLR! The series has been great to write so far and an article specifically about leadership being about people will be published on wednesday so I hope a few people check that out!

Thanks for the reference to Peter Block. I've never read anything of his so nice to get recommendations for good writers on a great topic.

I agree so much with the above statements. Leadership is about people, not resources or human capital. Peter Block is a wonderful writer. Susan I am away this week but I would wonder about Peter's thoughts on Obama as he elevated to rock star and beyond. I hope Obama makes everyone feel like a leader and be a leader, I am concerned that he will be seen as the political savior.

DLR, I agree with King's assessment. I just finished reading Peter Block's book: Community- the Structure of Belonging and he makes some bold and challenging statements about leadership, mainly that we get it all wrong. We give leaders rock star status (my words not his). He feels we are not engaged as communities or as organizations because we are waiting for the leader to do it, fix it, etc. We all need to be leaders and we need to let go of our medieval ideas of pecking order and class to get to engagement.

A manager should always remember he/she is "on stage"- and his/her subordinates notice every little trait so always exhibit the behavior you would want them to emulate.

Hi Ben... Thanks for the reply! Question--what have you seen as a "clear, coherent script" that assures success? And do you think such scripts need updating to address the shifts we've seen in organizations and the marketplace? All the best from…

Interesting question. I'm drawn to less is more, and even that may be too much :) My experience has shown me that the more fearful the organisation is, the more often it seeks to measure as a means to try and stave off the fear. It then often ends u…

I would contend never is too soon. If you understand what engagement is and how to achieve it, then you know what an engaged employee sounds like and acts like as compared to one who is somewhat engaged or disengaged. Surveys turn people off while…
