Profile

About Me: (Please let us know about you and also add a picture to your profile).
I am currently the Director of Tactical Development at msnbc.com. The mission of the Tactical Team is to support msnbc.com’s profitability goals by rapidly executing opportunistic projects for maximum reach and revenue impact—these projects are most often quick-win sales and business opportunities that manifest without notice and could not be planned for during fiscal year priority and resource forecasting, so our tactic was to create a team that could plan for the unplanned.

My interest in technology, and the web in particular, started while pursuing a Master’s degree in English and Film at the University of Florida. The English Department received a grant to establish computer-based writing labs, and I taught experimental writing courses that examined how different technologies transformed the way students wrote and communicated with one another. I was on the path to a Ph.D. with the assumption I would become professor of film theory someday somewhere, but my experience in the classroom sparked my curiosity about how the web was transforming the way we interacted with one another more than anything I was actually studying, so I made the decision to leave with my Masters and see where this interest took me (this was back in 1994, when the web was still nascent). I started a career in web development and moved from designer, to engineer, to program manager before taking on a management role.
What is your involvement in employee engagement?
I am relatively new to management, so my perspective on and interest in Employee Engagement is from the middle.
Where are you located?
Seattle

Alphabet Soup: Employee Engagement from A-Z

I don’t claim to be an expert on Employee Engagement, but I couldn’t resist using David Zinger’s invitation for submissions of an alphabet with the keys to engagement as an opportunity to capture what I have learned so far. These “keys” are a combination of things I have discovered through my own experiences, what I have learned from different management and leadership books, (just finished:… Continue

Article on Social Aspects of Peer Code Reviews Posted

I recently posted a review of Jason Cohen’s Best Kept Secrets of Peer Code Review. What does this have to do with Employee Engagement? Read on… The prospect of my team tripling in size in a four month timeframe got me thinking about how to maximize the benefit of the code reviews we were conducting…Time was not on my side of course (is it ever?), and reading the book kept falling behind other priorities—we were already doing code reviews, after all, so I could sleep at night knowing o… Continue

Enjoyed your Alphabet Soup, Lisa. Loved balance, humor and especially wonder. Loved your link to the 'Think Like a Kid' post.

Reminded me a bit of "the dee dah day dance" John Orteberg talks about.

Lisa,

Thanks. I'll need to take some time and read your blog posts. I agree that tapping into the individual passions of each person and harnessing that towards some common cause or strategy is the way to get everyone engaged.

Lisa,
I am pleased you will do the A to Z post/article. I think if we get a number it will make a great free ebook to be offered from our network or our own sites.
